Look, we understand that the wonderful world of hair styling is full of jargon and lingo that can sometimes seem like mumbo jumbo if you aren’t in the know. Pre-lightening, over directing, tipping, what on earth does it all mean? “Exactly,” we hear you say, “and while we’re at it what the heck is colour glossing?!” you yell into the void, exasperated. Well, we’re glad you asked – we love a good glossing and we’re here to give you the rundown on what it means, how it works, and why you (and your hair) need one in your life. We’re going to give you the gloss goss, if you will.
How Glossing Works
While not a substitute for permanent hair colour, glossing is an important and often over-looked part of the colouring process and depending on the condition of your hair, will help keep your locks shiny and strong, and your colour vivid and eye-catching for up to six weeks. Where permanent dye works by forcing open the hair cuticles and colouring from the inside, a gloss coats and seals the cuticle, leaving a smooth surface and a shine to be reckoned with. Glossing is sometimes referred to as toning, and while the process is similar, the two have their differences.
Blondies will know toner well, since it’s the nifty little product that neutralises dreaded brassiness in blonde hair. Glossing also works to get rid of that unwanted yellow or orange and replace with icy cool or lovely warm tones – depending on your preference – in their place, but it can do much more than that. Our Goldwell Colorance glosses nourish and condition the hair, similar in some ways to a hair mask, and they actually improve the quality of your hair by 35% each time you have one applied. 35%! Pretty cool, right?
Don’t get us wrong, though, glossing is not just for blonde hair. It can work it’s shine-making magic on brunettes, redheads and, well, really any and every hair colour. Whether you want to take down, or amp up, the red hue in your brunette, try out a pastel look over your already lightened tresses without any big commitments and damage, or go for a transparent gloss over black hair for truly incredible shine, we can create and customise glosses for just about every colour you can think of.
